My kids’ insurance has this feature. They get reduced premiums and other perks like 50% off hotel stays and things like that.

My suggestion for improving the healthcare system is to remove the gatekeeper role of family physicians between the people and the services they need. With so many people not able to access family doctors how are they supposed to get referred for therapy, massage, physio and all sorts of other necessary professional services? Health insurance should allow people to self-refer. If someone thinks they need to speak with a therapist why do they need a doctor to agree and make the referral? It doesn’t make sense and makes accessing that service impossible for many people. Trust people to make good choices about seeking the help they need. Leave it up to the professionals involved to determine if they can offer an appropriate service or not.

These are really great points. I love that your insurance does this. The gatekeeper is something I’ve never really considered. Honestly, will a GP ever say no to physio? Or massage? If the physio thinks it’s a waste of time, they can refuse the consult. I like this

Right? And psychotherapists will see people without a referral already. The client just needs the referral for the insurance that they’re paying for through their work or privately! Maybe its time to stop making family physicians the only first line of défense!

Thank you for the challenge Dr. K . I love the idea of reduced insurance premiums for 50,000 steps weekly. Your co-founding Bridges Over Barriers was an excellent example of how an intergenerational group of caring, committed, hard and smart working individuals made a difference to youth in schools.

Yes, there needs to be some sort of motivation for staying healthy - I believe (but don't quote me on it) there is a system like this in Japan. I think we just need to get the word out about alternatives to meds too - many parents I see (esp. in the US) have never even had exercise, reduced screen time, or less sugar suggested by a doctor instead of ADHD meds. Some doctors dig deeper to find out what's going on and they know about more options but many just don't know and it's unfortunate. I think having more doctors here so they actually have more time to spend with each patient is key. We need more spots in med schools and more foreign-trained doctors working here. And getting WAY more coverage of natural solutions to health problems - like every major morning show should be talking about this type of thing - and I think viewers are very interested too - I'm always questioned at social events about what to eat for certain health problems - people want natural solutions! Not very creative I know, but all I can think of!
