Recently, I had an enlightening conversation with the CEO of a company called Well Health. This company uses technology to enhance patient outcomes and what stood out was the CEO's focus. It was not solely on profitability, but rather on impact - the difference we can make in the world. This ethos, I believe, is the direction in which healthcare needs to head.
Instead of prioritizing individual accolades such as publication credits or small-scale project funding, we need to think bigger. The healthcare sector is currently navigating a crisis, making it the perfect time to strategize innovative solutions that will yield substantial returns.
We spoke about leveraging virtual care to improve access to primary care. In their model, patients have access to a primary care physician anywhere in the province, while the required services are provided locally. Imagine living in Markham but having a family doctor in Thunder Bay. The ultrasound you need could be ordered at Markham Stouffville Hospital, with your family doctor in Thunder Bay coordinating everything.
Innovative ideas like this, ones that push traditional boundaries and can be scaled up, are what we need. For instance, about 25% of people do not have family doctors, making this a crucial solution to a widespread problem.
Ultimately, I urge everyone to concentrate on making an impact. We need to shift our focus from hollow pursuits to substantial, transformative actions.
