Preface

My father, Solomon Kyeremanteng, was a man of many

facets. Born in a quaint village in Ghana in 1939, he grew

up amidst a large family. His pursuit of knowledge led him

to Germany, where he completed his engineering degree.

In 1967, he relocated to Edmonton and took on the role of

managing Alberta's farm safety program. This role demanded

his presence all over the province, leading safety talks.

During my childhood, I often accompanied my father on

these provincial expeditions. We shared a lot of time on the

road, marked by innumerable burger and fries pit-stops. These

drives offered me a unique window into my father's world and

his dynamic, funny, and charismatic personality. Solomon was

well-known and loved by many; his charisma seemed to leave

an indelible impression on everyone he met.

However, there existed a stark difference between the

man the public knew and the man I knew at home. In private,

my father could be stringent and demanding. A lesson that

resonates with me till this day, fondly known as the First Rule

of Solomon, states, "As a black person, you need to put in

additional effort, outshine the white individual standing next

to you. Be the clear choice so that when a decision is made,

it inevitably falls in your favor. This way, regardless of the

outcome, your conscience is clear. There's no room for regret."

He often reinforced this idea, saying, "You gotta leave them

no options."

I took my father's advice to heart, and it has guided me to

where I am today. I'm now an ICU doctor and a palliative care

specialist, the person who helps patients either recover their

lives or transition from this world as comfortably as possible.

Outside of medicine, I use my podcast -- Kwadcast -- among

other platforms to advocate for change.

While medicine is my primary vocation, I've formulated

four guidelines applicable beyond healthcare. They are equally

effective within companies, political organizations, non-profit-

its, sports teams, educational institutions, and social clubs.

These principles are universal, underlining my unapologetic

approach to leadership.
