Healthy Habits to Prevent Burnout: Drink more WATER!!
The pandemic has highlighted the courage and commitment of our nurses and the important role they play in the community. For National Nursing Week 2021, check out my Daily Healthy Habit to support our nurses mental and physical health and well-being.
Drink more WATER!
Our bodies are 60% water so we need to drink enough in order to function properly and feel our best.
When we don’t drink enough water, it can lead to headaches, low energy & mood, and impaired memory & brain function.
Drinking enough water = healthy digestion, or in other words is the best way to poop everyday! ;)
Water curbs appetite and can increase satiety. Oftentimes we confuse hunger with thirst! Reach for a big glass of water before a snack, or 30 minutes before a meal to prevent overeating.
Drinking enough water can also enhance physical performance during exercise, and improve the look of our skin.
How much water should you drink? The amount is different for everyone, and can vary based on activity level, temperature, and other factors. A good place to start is take your weight in pounds, divide this number in half and drink at least that many ounces of water each day.
Set yourself up for success! Buy a big 2-3L water bottle, fill it with room temperature water in the morning, and aim to drink it all by the end of the day. Start right when you get up in the morning (even better to squeeze a few organic lemon slices in your first glass on an empty stomach!), and continue drinking throughout the day in between meals (not with meals to avoid diluting your digestive juices).
Keep it interesting by flavouring water with citrus, fruit or fresh herbs like watermelon and mint.
Natural flavoured sparkling water is a great choice, especially in the afternoon when you may be craving something sweet, and are tired of flat water (2 cans a day max.). I love the Farm Boy Organic, Bubly and La Croix brands!
